Step 1
Starting a green business is unique because the consumer base is exclusive and less concerned with price than with how your product or service contributes to the environment. There are many niche markets that are available where you can manufacture and sell green products. Cosmetics, cleaning supplies, manufacturing solar panels or halogen light bulbs, and growing organic products and foods are all expanding markets.
Step 2
Get a green seal or certification to show on your products. Apply to an organization recognized for setting eco-friendly standards, such as the U.S. Green Building Council, the Chlorine Free Products Association or the USDA National Organic Program. This label on your product, or beside your logo, will provide consumers with immediate recognition of your brand as ‘eco-friendly.’ It will boost sales and make and attract potential affiliates to your business.
Step 3
Team up with an industry partnership and product stewardship program. Groups like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will sponsor the production of your product if it meets their expectations. Network with eco-friendly organizations. Associate with activist groups for the environment. Focus on providing green solutions for small businesses trying to conserve energy or cut costs on supplies. Target homeowners interested in making housing renovations to capitalize on tax breaks provided by the government for more energy-efficient repairs.
Step 4
Advertise. The benefit of manufacturing green products is that there are many businesses that would like to be associated with your product. Be wary about associating your product with any publication, or advertising through any business, that might be locally known for not recycling, being wasteful, or just not being environmentally conscious. Make sure all fliers, or material used to advertise your business are recyclable or biodegradable. Don’t be afraid to market your product to non-green consumers by presenting your product as a smarter alternative to the traditional form or method.
